O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. Her performance on the show impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received high praise from the judges. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by this, and told the audience they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. She was the judge. Werner said, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest ever to win the show after the 7th September finals in 2005. O'Neil received a phone call immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
